Red, White and Blue Challenge

If you are doing the color challenges you
may have noticed that this week is a 1/2 week
between our last blue challenge and our 1st
red challenge. so I thought it might be fun
as the 4th of July is this week to combine the two
and do a red, white and blue challenge! Each of you can decide if you want to do a craft, bake something, show an outfit,
a collage of some of your fave things with
those colors or anything else you can come up with!
Good luck and I'll watch for your posts! So our Red Challenges don't start until the week of
July 5-11, That still gives us 4 weeks of red:)

and a fun redo item that'll show up in
a future post!
There was a whole lot more I could've
bought, but they'll be having 3 more sales this summer
so....I'll save some shopping for another time!

It's the Berries

Finally there came a day when the sun shone and
the berries were sweet
and so we added twice as much sugar
as crushed berries
so they were REALLY sweet
and then we have freezer jam
so in the middle of winter
we can take a taste of sunshine
with our morning toast!
Happy Sweet Summertime

Suggested Reading for Girls of All ages

I just had to put in a plug for one of
my favorite series of all time.
It is the Betsy/Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace.
They are perfectly geared to all ages because the first book
takes place when the girls are 5 and is written very simply
so a girl close to that age could read them. Then each book
starts getting a little more advanced,
following the lives of a set of girl friends in the early 19oos,
and eventually ends
with the girls grown up and getting married. Anyone from Minnesota will recognize many of the things
mentioned as it takes place there.
I think I have read them 100s of times and finally
just purchased the set, so my granddaughter
can start them when she is old enough.
Although they are not technically Christian
they were written back in the days
of morals and church going in most
of America so are appropriate for anyone to read.
I hope all of you young and old are getting some
summer reading done!

Blue Challenge #4

Blueberry Lemon Bars My baking challenge this time was decided
by the fresh blueberries that are
appearing around town.
These are made from a basic lemon bar recipe
with blueberries added to the lemon mixture before baking.
They are yummy and tart!
I use Gluten free flour for the crust
and they always turn out great.

A True Father

This is my Dad.
This year he will be 90 years old.
He has been, not just a Dad,
but a true father to his family.
He not only took care of our physical needs
and wants, but to this day cares
more about our spiritual health
than anyone else has ever done.
He still prays for each of his 8
living children, their spouses, children and
grandchildren by name every day, and
he just had his 128th (I think!)
great-grandchild added to his family.
He continues to love my Mom with
a true love, that has not wavered
in all the 60 + years they've been married.
When he goes to glory someday
I can't imagine who will be praying for me and
taking care of my soul like he has. He will be irreplaceable.
I never doubted God's Father heart because
I have such a great example and he gave me a solid
familiarity with God's Word
that has been a lifetime guide and joy in
my own life. If every child was raised
in a home with a Dad like mine
the world would be a much better place!
Thanks, Dad
I love you!

Desk Redo/Room Redo Part 1

Remember this desk from my room redo post?
(and the blue walls?!) Here's the desk redone with the new wall color behind,.
I used Homestead Resort Olive from Lowes for the desk
base color, sanded it and then antiqued it with acrylic
Burnt Sienna to give it more of an aged look.
Question: does anyone know why it still feels
a little tacky after 3 days?
This is my first furniture painting project so
I may have done something wrong.

The wall color is also from Lowes-
Olive White

By the way the predrilled holes were 4 inches apart
for the drawer pulls and there are NO 4 " pulls
to be had so I resorted to 2 knobs per drawer,
not exactly what I wanted...but...
I wasn't about to special order any for
an old desk that will be in a spare room!

Blue Challenge #3

On a recent thrifting day I found this
purse with a cute picture, but ugly handle and binding.
When I looked at what was written
above the store window though I knew I had found
my Blue #3 challenge!
My youngest "Color My World" challenger
is http://madisonsavenue-madison.com/ she joined in late, caught up
and has kept me on my toes each month
when other bloggers haven't been able to
get their challenges done.
I've been wanting to do something special for her... I found some fun fabric over at "Cissy Sews"
some trims from my bin, cut off the ugly handle
and went to work!

Here are some close up details with the sign peeking through.

And here is the finished project which I hope
"Madisons Avenue" will enjoy,
even if she just wants to hang it in her room:)

Let me know your address Madison,
@ karenneh8_10@msn.com
and I'll get this sent to you with
a special hello and thanks for keeping
me going on those challenges!

Retro Play Suit

I found this adorable vintage pattern
at the junk store for 50 cents.
It is a size 8! I really could
not imagine a 7 or 8 year old in our day and age
wearing this. I decided to take the idea
and use it for a little girl.
I used a size 1 pattern I had and altered it a bit to come up with a similar look but using
bolder colors. See the retro lawn chairs
on the top fabric though? That's a Moda Fabric. It looks so cute on Brielle that I think I
might use the idea again in a new line
of clothes I'm designing ideas for.

Now we just need some sunny weather!

Room Redo Inspiration

I posted quite awhile back (Feb, 11)
about a room redo I was planning.
At that point I had a very blue room with
a desk and questions about what I should use the
room for. After that a dark brown leather
hide-a-bed got moved in there...
so it became a guest room/ office by proxy!
Anyway I finally came up with enough ideas
to get started! The walls are painted a soft green, and the desk will
be the darker green as seen in the Pottery barn catalog.
I will keep you posted as I put it together,
and do the various crafts required!
The soft green really made the room look
so serene and light, I'm so glad I chose that:)

Blue Challenge #2

I decided to do another restructure project for this challenge.
The long sleeve Tee above got a couple of small holes
in the bottom , so I decided to use it for this.
I cut off the bottom, and made 3/4 length sleeves
Cut down the center, and cut strips to gather
for the ruffle.

When I did a simple zigzag stitch on the hem
and sleeves, it made a really pretty ruffle
effect without adding anything else.
The finished project is something I will
wear often because I love the color
and the style.

Local Color

Today was sunny at last and I spent part of it on
Main Street of Battleground
checking out the expanded Uncovered Ruby!
As you can see I was in a "Red" mood! Its just gorgeous inside and with so many vendors
there's sure to be something for all.

Be sure to go check them out.
They'll also be well represented at the next
"Vintage Gatherings" show which is
going to be held for 2 days
just east of BG.
June 25 and 26

my heart today

" roses will bloom again
just wait and see
who knows what might have been
only God knows how and when
roses will bloom again"
(I was unable to find the author
to these song lyrics from a very old song)

Sassy Stripes

Thanks to www.rufflesandstuff.com for the tutorial
on making a little girls' "Beachcomber Dress".
My daughter had seen a dress at Gap for her
little girl but it was too spendy.
When I found this junior dress at Ross for $6.99
I knew I could use it to make a pretty good replica .I cut off the cowl neck and used it for the yoke.
It is folded down and elastic sewn in.
The bottom of the dress was reused as the bottom
of her dress with the hem intact:)

I used strips of the fabric and braided it for the ties.

Here she is looking very sassy in her
new dress. I had to put her on the table
to get her to stay still long enough to take
the pic!
Here's the back view:)
Easy project and fun!

Life is...

Cherries in a Bowl
I think it must be sweet
to grow as round as
a summer cherry
to wait until Gods' time
to be what I was meant to be.
If I was meant to be golden
on one side and red the other
I wouldn't complain or
spend my life in a grumpy mutter.
I would just be a cherry
with a bursting, juicy taste and
give back to others more
than was given to me.
Today I'll thank God for who I am
and what He designed for me to be
and if I sometimes forget
to live it,
I'll think again of
of this bowl of cherries.
Karen
HAPPY JUNE!!!
