Brown Challenge #5! (Open Challenge)

Looks like we ended up with an extra week in our

brown challenge! So I think to give a fun twist

on this week lets pick anything

we want to share that has to do with brown.

It can be Whatever! So let your

imaginations go:)

PJ Party

My newest sewing project is a pair of retro pajamas.

I used the vintage pattern above for the top

and a wide leg pj pant pattern for the bottoms.

Brown Challenge #3

The unusual part of this challenge

is that I took a brown crayon

and rubbed it sideways over a piece of paper

placed on top of a sidewalk medallion.

I found this on Officers Row in downtown Vancouver.

I thought this was an unusual way to

have a souvenir of a sight seeing trip.Then I used it on my scrapbook page as

a background along with pictures etc.
This could be used anytime there is lettering
or numbers that is raised or indented on
metal or concrete.
Many older structures will have a building date
engraved somewhere on the property, and
I've also seen stamps in streets and brick,
so there are many ways it could be used:)

Covered Bridges of Linn County Albany #4

The very last stop on my day trip was to find

some covered bridges a few miles from

Albany. Oregon has the largest amount

of them west of the Mississippi.

For some reason I just love a covered bridge!

By the time I drove to this one I was too tired from

my busy day to try to find any more:)

But it was a good ending to a perfect day!

A Funny Thing Happened ...Albany #3

The Saturday I spent touring Albany was

the first time I purposely dressed in "vintage".

I'm not sure if I was quite ready for the reaction

I received! I must have had 50 people comment

on one or more parts of my outfit and

many more were watching me everywhere

I went...! For a person who likes to just

"be alone doing my own thing"

it was a bit overwhelming and

a little embarrassing too.

At the end of the day a photographer

from the Visitors Association asked

to take and publish my picture!

This is the photo he took and may use.

I had to laugh, especially as all

the pieces of my "outfit"

were modern, and none were

truly vintage:)

Not sure if I will dare to ever "dress up" again!

Albany #2 Carousel Museum and Workshop

I found a delightful museum in Albany,

that anyone who loves to ride a carousel

will appreciate:)There are actual horses and other pieces from

old carousels in the museum room,
and then a whole workshop all staffed by volunteers
who are drawing, carving, painting
and glazing all the pieces for a new carousel
that will be housed in Albany.
They said at the rate they are moving
it will be done in about 7 years!

Anyone who is interested can be trained
to help with whatever part they are interested in.
There were carvers working on blocks of wood,
creating animals and other parts,
and painters working in the paint workshop,
so you can see all stages of the process!
Absolutely fascinating
to the artist in me!

I would highly recommend a visit there
with children, artistic folk and anyone else
who might be interested.

Albany Antiques in the Streets #1

I spent Saturday down at an event

in Albany, Oregon, the historic town south of Salem.

It is called Antiques in the Streets

and involves vendors setting up their wares down one

of the most historic streets.

They also had an old car rally.

I had such a fun day that I will do several posts on

different aspects:) Not only are there wonderful old buildings and museums, there is also one of the largest
and well displayed antique malls I've been to. There was a whole room of vintage clothing, purses
and shoes. I tried on a dress from the 1940's
that fit me like it was made for me,
but alas it had a large faded spot on the skirt.


The people were so friendly and it has that

nice, small town feel.

Definitely worth a drive down anytime,

if you like history and antiques.

Culottes

I have been thinking about how comfortable

a wide -leg culotte would be for fall

and when I found this fabric I knew

I had to try to sew a pair.

I modified pattern McCalls 5813

which is a simple, elastic waist,

wide -leg pant.

For this look I wore a Tshirt, wide elastic belt

and small heeled pumps

but I think these will also

be great paired with boots and a sweater

when the weather gets colder.

Again it's all about the comfort:)

Settling into Fall

Despite the fact that I enjoy changing

my house decor seasonally, I love when

Fall comes and I can go back to the colors

that my house looks "best" in!

Brown Challenge #2

Here is the felt hat I made for this weeks challenge.

It is a cloche style with twisted ribbon

and a vintage wooden pin.

Vested Interest

I finally used the nubby tweed fabric

I've been planning to use for many

falls in a row! The vest is pattern McCalls 5887

and its paired with my high waisted jeans,
a animal print belt and a ruffled

blouse from JJill.

It ended up a little bulkier than I had

envisioned but it is a perfect

vest for a chilly fall day:)

1940's style Jeans

I have finally finished my pair of jeans

that are made to look like the

high waisted pants of the 1940s era.

The original pattern is Butterick 5250

but I modified it so the front fastens with buttons not a zipper.

The pattern fit me perfectly and they

are so comfy they feel like pajamas!

The length is a little short for the trends

today, but I mostly plan to wear them with

flats or a small heel.

I am so glad not to have to worry

about muffin tops or anything else

hanging out, these cover everything up!!

If You Had a Bad Day...

I read somewhere that if things in your

life are not going well and you're feeling

down or depressed, the best thing

you can do is spend some time with a small child:) This little princess has brought me so much joy

this summer...
and that is what I'm choosing to think about
when I look back over the last 3 months.

Thank you God for my grand daughter!
